Personal:

I know Sasha from the CS program at BYU. We both graduated in 1997. He probably doesn't remember me, because he was definitely more vocal in class and among the students than I was.

Married to Teresa with 3 kids: Anders (4), Kristian (9), and Zoe (12).

Fluent in Danish, but there is obviously very little need for that.

After a tough workout last week followed by a disappointing showing at the Leprechaun Lope 5k (2nd overall, but fatigued), I decided to attack this race a little differently. I focussed my speed workout on Tuesday on mile-long cruises, and ran every other day except for Friday. I also started taking my road bike out this week, so those workouts helped balance things out a little better than my spin classes.

I met up with my friends at the finish line and took it nice and slow up to the start. Then we did some strides and I felt good.

The race started off this year up on the hill a little bit on the "This is the Place Monument" road, so we were slightly higher than previous years that started on the road. Not a huge difference, but it made for a faster than ever first mile. I felt fluid and good as I cruised through and heard the guy at mile 1 yell out "5:05". I concentrated on my turnover on the slight uphill and on the flat, which is where I made most of my ground and passed several people. Once back on Sunnyside, I held on pretty well until I felt my left calf cramp up on the last drop. I tried not to lose any ground because I was feeling better than I do at most short races. That seemed to be the difference as I held my pace and gritted my teeth through the end.

The results showed me behind a couple elite masters, but I was glad to see that I was 2nd out of all guys in their '30s (next to Teren Jameson). Not that I was anywhere near him, but at least the first in my age group wasn't a complete gift. :)

Nicely done. I need to get better at gritting through the end of a race, thanks for the reminder.
